Lillestrøm Seek to Cap European Week With Home Win Over Wobbly Aalesund at Åråsen Stadium
There is rarely a dull moment when Lillestrøm and Aalesund share a pitch, and Sunday evening at Åråsen Stadium promises more of the same. The hosts arrive with a busy fixture list behind them and Europe still on the mind; the visitors turn up with a defence that has been leaking goals for months.
Lillestrøm: Europe Hangover or Healthy Momentum?
It has been a strange few weeks for Lillestrøm. A 6-0 mauling by Real Sociedad in the Europa League was followed by a gutsy 3-2 win over Brann, a 2-1 cup victory over Sogndal and a 1-0 success at Start. Then came Thursday’s 1-0 home defeat to Plzen, a night when the home side simply could not find a way through. With 13 wins from 25 league games, the form guide shows a side capable of both brilliance and wobbles, but the recent league results have been encouraging.
Åråsen has been the source of plenty of their attacking joy this season: 22 goals in 12 home games, an average of 1.8 per outing. Those goals tend to arrive late, too. Nearly 30 percent of their strikes have come between the 76th and 90th minutes, so anyone leaving early could miss the drama. Their defence has been shakier at home, though, conceding 19 times in those dozen matches.
Aalesund: Goals Galore, Defending Optional
Aalesund’s season can be summed up by one number: 57. That is how many goals they have shipped in 25 league games, a staggering 2.3 per match. They have kept just a single clean sheet all year. Their latest outing was a wild 4-3 home defeat to Sandefjord, and before that they lost 2-1 at Sarpsborg 08. A 4-1 romp at Kristiansund and a 2-0 cup win there show they can hurt opponents, but consistency has been elusive: five wins, nine draws and eleven defeats tell the story.
The positives? They score regularly, with 43 goals so far and at least one in all but two of their games on the road. Their 5-3-2 shape gives them a solid platform, but that has not translated into defensive security. They also pick up plenty of bookings, particularly late in games, which could add spice on Sunday.
History Favours the Hosts
Lillestrøm have won three of the last four meetings, including a 3-1 win in Ålesund back in March and a 5-1 thrashing at Åråsen in 2025. The fixture has a habit of producing goals, and on this evidence there is little reason to expect a tactical stalemate.
The Verdict
Lillestrøm are the more stable side, they have the home advantage, and Aalesund’s defensive record makes them vulnerable to a team that scores freely in front of its own supporters. The hosts may be tired after their European exertions, and the visitors have the firepower to cause problems, so a goal-filled contest looks likely. Expect Lillestrøm to edge it, perhaps after a late push, as the Sunday crowd at Åråsen Stadium gets its money’s worth.
